Interest in studying the phenomena of convective heat and mass transfer between an ambient fluid and a body which is immersed in it stems both from fundamental considerations, such as the development of better insights into the nature of the underlying physical processes which take place, and from practical considerations, such as the fact that these idealised configurations serve as a launching pad for
modelling the analogous transfer processes in more realistic physical systems. Such idealised geometries also provide a test ground for checking the validity of theoretical
analyses. Consequently, an immense research effort has been expended in exploring and understanding the convective heat and mass transfer processes between a fluid and submerged objects of various shapes. Among several geometries which have received considerable attention are plates, circular and elliptical cylinders, and spheres, although much information is also available for some other bodies, such as
corrugated surfaces or bodies of relatively complicated shapes.


The book is a unified progress report which captures the spirit of the work in progress in boundary-layer heat transfer research and also identifies potential difficulties and areas for further study. In addition, this work provides new material on convective heat and mass transfer, as well as a fresh look at basic methods in heat transfer. Extensive references are included in order to stimulate further studies of the problems considered. A state-of-the-art picture of boundary-layer heat transfer today is presented by listing and commenting also upon the most recent successful efforts and identifying the needs for further research.

Summary:

The subjects covered include heat conduction, forced and natural convection, thermal radiation, boiling, condensation, heat exchangers, and mass transfer.

The book includes worked examples and end-of-chapter exercises.

The third edition (2003) has been extensively revised and updated from the old second edition (1987).


About the Authors:

John H. Lienhard IV is internationally known for his work in heat transfer and thermal science, which spans some 40 years of research and teaching. He is a professor at the University of Houston and the creator of the program Engines of Our Intenguity which airs on public radio nationally. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and has received dozens of awards for his research and teaching.

John H. Lienhard V is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working in the fields of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. During more than 15 years at MIT, he has received several awards for his teaching, as well as awards for his research. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

This is a Great Book

This Book is much Better than any of the Other books out there as far as a GOOD Engineering reference for Heat Transfer. This Book is highly logical and very practical. The Author does not bog you down into the differential equations and boundary conditions, which is un necessary for 99% of all Heat Transfer work. Anwers to problems are not as needed when they have Detailed Examples with Step by step solutions for several problems each chapter. The person above will find a better appreciation for the book when he becomes a professional and doesn't have time to look at theory till you go blind. The book does do a Fair attempt at more then 1 dimensional Heat Transfer patterns and is an Excellent Resource for Theory and Application of all Types of Heat Transfer.

A great book if you want to be confused

The book has much information, but it is not in a very logical format. When you need an equation to use a look up chart, don't expect to find one. The charts in the book are useful, but you really have to know what is going on ahead of time, not a good book to learn from. Using this book as a reference book when taking a test is not a good idea. I wish these people would have put at least the odd answers in the back of the book. With out the answers, especially when your teacher doesn't go over hw with you, you have no clue how to do the problems

This book presents recent developments in systematic studies of hydrodynamics and heat and mass transfer in laminar free convection, accelerating film boiling and condensation of Newtonian fluids, as well as accelerating film flow of non-Newtonian power-law fluids (FFNF). A novel system of analysis models is provided with a developed velocity component method, instead of traditional Falkner-Skan type transformation, and a system of models for treatment of variable thermophysical properties is presented with an innovative temperature parameter method that makes it easier to similarly treat related governing differential equations for consideration of fluid variable thermophysical properties. A pseudo-similarity method is applied for dealing with thermal boundary layer of FFNF, furthermore, with an induced local Prandtl number, which greatly simplifies the heat-transfer analysis and numerical calculation. Based on rigorous theoretical analyses, a system of numerical solutions is formulated by special curve-fitting approaches for simple and reliable predictions of heat and mass transfer and hydrodynamics. In view of a shortage of experimental results for velocity field of free convection boundary layer, recent rigorous experimental measurements are presented covering large temperature differences.
